Europe’s Golden Visa Boom: From 3 to 23 Programs in 10 Years

More than half of Europe’s countries now have a formal residence by investment program. We’ve mapped the development in a GIF.

In 2008, only Gibraltar, the UK, and Monaco had formal residence by investment programs. Today, 23 of Europe’s 44 countries have golden visas.

On our map, we’ve only included residence by investment programs that a) grant residence permits in exchange for passive investment (i.e. not those that require active management of a business, for example) and b) have a pre-determined investment requirement (i.e. not those where the price is determined on a case-by-case basis, such as Switzerland’s forfait solution).

The following European jurisdictions have golden visa programs in 2018:

  1. Malta
  2. Cyprus
  3. United Kingdom
  4. Ireland
  5. Portugal
  6. Greece
  7. Spain
  8. France
  9. Latvia
  10. Estonia
  11. Bulgaria
  12. Czech Republic
  13. Italy
  14. Andorra
  15. Belgium
  16. Jersey
  17. Isle of Man
  18. Luxembourg
  19. Monaco
  20. Netherlands
  21. Gibraltar
  22. Romania
  23. Ukraine
