Program Overview

Aruba Retiree Residence Permit

The Aruba Retiree / Interest Rate Earner Residence Permit allows non-working residence on a renewable one-year basis, with a path to permanent residency and ultimately Dutch citizenship. Aruba, a self-governing constituent country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the southern Caribbean, manages its own immigration and residency, while Dutch nationality is governed by Kingdom law.

Eligibility requires either a guaranteed pension, annuity, or interest income of at least Afl. 50,000 (US$28,000) per year, or, without guaranteed income, documented income of Afl. $100,000 (approximately $55,000) per year from assets or qualifying rental income.

How to Qualify

To qualify for the Aruba Retiree / Interest Rate Earner Residence Permit, applicants must meet the following requirements:

Retired with guaranteed income:

You must be 55 years of age or older and have a guaranteed pension income, or a guaranteed annuity with an annual gross yield of at least Afl. 50,000 (US$27,778); or interest earnings from an investment fund in a recognized country, where the deposit has been maintained for two or more years and the yearly yield is at least Afl. 50,000 (US$27,778).

The income must originate from an authorized commercial bank in one of the following:

  • The Kingdom of the Netherlands
  • A member State or candidate Member State of the OECD
  • A member state of UNASUR
  • A member state of CARICOM
  • A country with which the EU has an economic cooperation or association agreement within the framework of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership

Retired or interest-rate earner without guaranteed income:

You must be an adult (18+) and be able to prove either an annual income of Afl. 100,000 (US$55,556) from assets held as bank balances or investments at qualifying banks; or yearly rental income of Afl. 100,000 (US$55,556) from real estate located in any of the jurisdictions listed above (Kingdom of the Netherlands, OECD members or candidates, UNASUR, CARICOM, or Euro-Med partner countries).

Non-working condition and work permit:

This residence permit does not allow paid employment. If you intend to work, you must obtain a separate work permit during the licensed period.

Permit duration and renewals:

The initial permit is granted for one year. It is renewable annually, provided you continue to meet all applicable conditions. For guaranteed-income applicants, the permit duration is tied to the guaranteed income but is always issued in one-year increments.

Documentation:

Prepare the following for application and renewal, as applicable:

  • Form B
  • Statement of income
  • Bank account statement evidencing the required average yearly income
  • Legal documentation for first-time applications

Aruba Retiree Residence Permit

Citizenship Timeline and Requirements

In Aruba, the retiree/independent-means residence permit must be renewed annually and does not allow local employment. With continuous lawful residence, minimal absences, and ongoing Censo registration, eligibility for permanent residence typically arises after about five years.

For Dutch citizenship, lawful residence in Aruba counts toward the Kingdom-wide naturalization requirement of approximately five years of uninterrupted legal residence. Retirees usually follow the general naturalization route, which entails passing civic integration requirements (Dutch at roughly A2 level and knowledge of society), demonstrating good conduct and financial stability, and, in many cases, renouncing the prior nationality unless an exemption applies.

The clocks run on the same length of time for both citizenship and permanent residence, but they are separate applications with different criteria and authorities.
