Program Overview

Macao Self-Employed Visa

The Macao Self-Employed Visa (officially, Work Permit for Execution of Self-Profit Activity by Non-Resident) enables non-residents who conduct self-employed activities to obtain a one-year, renewable residence permit in Macao, an autonomous region of the People’s Republic of China.

Applicants must substantiate their professional activity, demonstrate sufficient economic means to live in Macao, and, where applicable, provide details on any local workers they employ.

After obtaining residence authorization and a Non-Permanent Resident Identity Card, holders may pursue permanent residency after seven consecutive years of habitual residence.

To qualify for the Macao Self-Employed Visa, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Professional activity proof: Supporting documents of activities carried out by the applicant (e.g., recommendation letters, certificates of work from previous employers indicating job title and job nature). If documents are in languages other than Chinese, English, or Portuguese, applicants should provide a translation in one of these languages

Citizenship Timeline and Requirements

Applicants should first secure Residence Authorization from the Public Security Police and then obtain a Non-Permanent Resident ID from DSI. Applicants must have lived in Macao habitually for seven uninterrupted years, which means spending at least 183 days per year and not being absent for more than six consecutive months.

Applicants should maintain evidence, such as employment records, tax returns, or school enrollment, and then file an application with DSI for Permanent Resident status, including proof of continuous residence and standard civil documents.

Naturalization as a Chinese national from Macao is technically possible but rare and discretionary. It usually requires close ties to Chinese nationals or other legitimate reasons, and applicants must renounce any existing citizenship.
