Honduras offers visas of 1-5 year validity to those who can demonstrate a regular foreign income of no less than US$1,500 per month.
After five years of residency, the applicant is eligible for permanent status.
After only three years of residency, however, the applicant is eligible to apply for citizenship in Honduras. Naturalization is contingent on passing a civics exam, as well as demonstrating a proficiency in Spanish language.
Honduras offers two types of income-based visas:
1. Rentista
2. Pensionado
The permit is valid for four years and can be renewed indefinitely as long as the individual continues to meet the terms. Permanent residency is available after 5 years of residency. Already after 3 years, however, the individual is eligible to apply for citizenship.
To qualify for residency in the Rentista category:
Applicants must prove a monthly, passive-form income from a foreign source of at least US$2,500, as well as additional income for each dependent. Applicants must receive this in a local bank account.
The income may take the form of dividends, annuities, rental income, and similar regularized passive revenue.
To qualify for residency under the Pensionado category:
Applicants must prove a monthly retirement pension from a foreign government or other recognized institution, a private company, or a bank amounting to at least US$1,500, as well as unspecified additional amounts for each dependent.
Both the Rentista and Pensionado visas are subcategories of the Special Residence Permit, which has a validity of up to five years, but in most cases two years initially.
The initial Rentista or Pensionado visa has a validity of between one and five years and is renewable indefinitely as long as the applicant continues to meet the requirements.
After just three years of residency in the Honduras, program participants are eligible to apply for citizenship. Applicants must demonstrate a knowledge of Honduran civics and Spanish language.
