The El Salvador Independent Means Visa program grants temporary residence permits to foreign nationals who receive and prove a stable monthly income from abroad through rental income, investment returns, or pensions/retirement income.
Residents under this program are prohibited from undertaking paid employment in El Salvador. The program allows inclusion of spouses, partners, and dependent children.

Applicants may choose to apply for temporary residence valid for either one year or two years. The residence permit is renewable upon expiration, allowing pensioners to maintain their legal status in El Salvador continuously. Application fees are non-refundable and vary based on the applicant’s nationality and chosen duration:

Foreign nationals can apply for permanent residency after living in El Salvador for three years. Once they’ve maintained legal residence for a total of five years, they become eligible to apply for citizenship through naturalization.
To qualify for citizenship, applicants must demonstrate good moral character, be able to support themselves financially, and meet El Salvador’s language and integration requirements.
Those holding residence based on independent means must maintain that status continuously throughout the whole period to remain eligible for naturalization.
