The Mercosur SSB: How One Passport Can Grant You Access to an Entire Continent
Most people think of passports as keys to a single country. But what if one passport could open the door
Brazil offers residence permits to those who invest in businesses or real estate above a certain sum. Business investors receive permanent residency immediately upon approval. Real estate investors are initially granted a temporary residence (TR) permit, which may be converted to permanent residency (PR) after 4 years, provided holders maintain the qualifying investment.
Business investment participants are eligible to apply for Brazilian citizenship after four years of permanent residency. Real estate investors must first hold temporary residency for 4 years before obtaining permanent residency, followed by an additional 4 years of PR before becoming eligible for citizenship, a total timeline of approximately 8 years.
Although a business investment of just US$28,000 is technically the minimum, this option is only feasible under very specific circumstances. Most applicants should expect to invest at least US$93,000 in a business or about US$133,000 in real estate (region-dependent).
To qualify for Brazil’s permanent residency for investors, applicants must invest either in Brazilian real estate or businesses.
Business investment options:
Under the business investment options, the applicant must show proof of subsistence and de facto residence.
For business investment, the business plan must obtain approval from the National Council of Immigration (CNI) to be eligible.
The applicant must prove that the company is in good standing and employs local residents to renew the permanent residence after three years.
Real estate investment options:
The investment must be maintained to retain residency.
Dependents may include a spouse, parents and children under 24 under family reunion.
Business Investment:
The Business Investor VIPER is a permanent residence visa issued immediately upon approval. The applicant must have his business reviewed by authorities after three years. After four years of continuous permanent residency, the applicant may apply for citizenship.
Real Estate Investment:
The real estate investor route grants an initial temporary residence (TR) permit for 2 years, renewable for a further 2 years, provided the investment is maintained. After 4 years of temporary residency, the applicant may apply for permanent residency (PR). Following an additional 4 years of permanent residency, the applicant may then apply for citizenship, for a total timeline of approximately 8 years. Physical presence of 30 days per annum is required to retain residency.
To maintain permanent residency (under either route), the applicant may not be absent for more than six consecutive months.
Brazil permits dual citizenship.
